It goes bump in the night.

While the next major update comes out here’s something to tantalize you for a bit . There’ve been quite a few people claiming this is project is fake because we don’t have a prototype. Well folks take a look at the Spartan in it’s physical glory.

Below are pictures of the console prototype. Please excuse the quality of the photos, a new camera is on it’s way. At that point we can actually shoot videos.

Here’s some info on what ports are available in the case:

The front

  • 2 front USB 3.0 ports

The back

  • 2 back USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 USB Type-C / Thunderbolt port
  • 1 HDMI outlet
  • 1 DisplayPort
  • 1 Ethernet port

To be added

  • We have space in the chassis to add a disc drive. For testing and development, we’ve been using external drives/peripherals to read media.

The 6 button controller

A lot of people have asked about creating a 6 face button controller. We’re looking into this (it may take some time) but we’re looking into revamping our controller to have 6 face buttons. There are a lot of us that miss those A, B, C, X, Y, Z buttons.

The “open source” OS.

If this proposal is successful with Sega, they will make this a proprietary closed source OS. We’re building a prototype so no decisions are final here.

In conclusion…

Thank you everyone for all your overwhelming support. It was completely unexpected. And to all those people criticizing and  ranting. Please be patient while we work on this prototype and in time we hope we can convince you otherwise.

This isn’t the update we wanted to give you but we hope it’s good enough to fill the gap while you wait.

Yep, it should have 6 Buttons, make them grey and the other ones Dreamcast colored. But 6 are Important.
Take a look at the 3D Sega Control Pad, add a Second analog Stick underneath the buttons and you have a Great unique controller.

Hey Chris. I am super excited for the Spartan. I would love for Sega to return to the console market, however I want to give you a warning. If you’re pitching this to Sega, you must be prepared for SOJ. In the 90s they were pitched a game console from Silicon Graphics and it was examined thoroughly and was nitpicked. In general, SOJ has had a hostile relationship with SOA in the past and even today there are some communication problems between the two. You will NEED to be a perfectionist when it comes to this. Think about what will appeal to an international audience, including Japanese gamers. Appealing to the Japanese is CRUCIAL, through the OS, the design of the hardware, and ESPECIALLY the controller. Take notes from what the Xbox did wrong and what other companies did right. Also be a perfectionist when it comes to the OS system. Think like Nintendo or Sony and how they make their consoles feel perfect and also different from the competition. These are just suggestions but I hope you keep them in mind. Good luck!

looks good i can’t wait. my two things. def try for the 6 buttons on the controller (i mean if this is “supposed” to be like a “tribute” to us sega fans, then at least give us what we ALL miss and that’s def the a,b,c,x,y,z buttons) my 2nd thing. n it’s obv mainly if sega supports you guys. DON’T MAKE IT OPEN SOURCE! for the love of god, does no one see that’s what fucken KILLS THINGS! that’s what makes it literally 100% EASIER TO PIRATE SHIT! sega are GODS ok KINGS and that is WHY BOTH the saturn and dreamcast have NOT been cracked yet and we’re in 2017, n there is STILL NO LEGIT emulator that can play ALL of the games 100% fine (for saturn and dreamcast) the most u get are emu’s that can play 1-2 games fine and others maybe 50% working but still with issues. the reason for that IS because SEGA KNOWS keep w/e is under that hood secret. again you’re making a “tribute” like system so DO IT RIGHT! go back to the actual OLD DAYS where pirating wasn’t as easy. the only reason so much shit gets pirated and SOOOOOOO easily now-a-days is LITERALLY all because of every dipshit out there going open source and for what? a couple of gay indie devs and shit indie games anyways? like i’ll take a pass. most indie titles aren’t that great, n the open source BS is just another excuse to give those indie devs more POSSIBILITY to make it easier to make their games on the said platform. i’d rather have my games NOT be pirated so easily (least the spartan exclusives) so it actually let’s us have a legit console with games NO ONE ELSE can have UNLESS they buy the system as well. opne source is shit. we need less indie devs because most indie games honestly are shit, i couldn’t tell you how many EA (early access) games fail. they either don’t get complete, or they get released and fall VERY short of the expectations, in other words, just because there have been maybe 1-2 GOOD indie games, the VAST majority of them are shit. n it’s just not needed nor wanted. i want a closed source system. so exclusive things, STAY exclusive. n it’s not just some damn system anyone can just open up and mod/change, n ALLLLLLL because it’s open source. that shit needs to go. it’s VERY VERY VERY unwanted. other than those two things, system looks great, n an update honestly on how your talks are going with SEGA would be nice. maybe a lot of people here have been curious and questioning the system itself, but i’m here for one reason, it was “said” to be a future “sega” system, so honestly, all i’m waiting for, is answers to THOSE questions. have you even talked to sega yet about this idea? what did they say? where do you (spartan team) and SEGA STAND so far with those talks? etc. because honestly (and i believe alot of other people feel the same way as i do) if this doesn’t become a “SEGA” system. i’m not buying it. i’m only HERE because it’s supposed to be a “Future SEGA” system and like their “return” into the hardware market. so if this isn’t going to be officially supported by SEGA (which means you guys WOULD do open source not closed source and that alone makes me not want to buy it to begin with) i’m just honestly not interested. my dream (along with many others) is to just have another “SEGA” system. one that yah i can go into the “shop” and buy/play all the classic sega games i loves back in the day, AS WELL as play new/current games, along with exclusives (such as that tech demo of that possible sonic 4k) think of what the nintendo shop does. literally a SHOP with NOTHING BUT nintendo shit, new things, and exclusives. now just imagine SEGA doing that. that’s the dream. n that’d be the only way i buy this thing. if it’s from SEGA,closed source, n as close to bringing us old classic games as well as letting us play new games etc. you guys pull that off. n i’m already sold. so hopefully you can update us all sometime soon with actual info on where you stand with talking to SEGA. has the idea even been pitched at them yet? because if it’s such a known thing (online wise) i’m pretty sure sega at least has heard of this thing or knows a little something about it, i mean shit, if i was able to google this and find this out (and i DON’T work for sega) pretty sure the people in sega could do the same thing. so honestly that’s what i would like to know. as interested as i am in this console, it all means nothing if “SEGA” isn’t behind it, n so i feel like that’s the real “update” you guys should be giving us. just where does all of this stand between you and sega, has the idea been pitched?, what did they say? etc. those are def more “important” questions then seeing the console etc. imo. either way good luck and i’ll keep following. just praying we get a 6 button controller, closed source, and obv SEGA behind it.

Grate system I’ll different buy one.
And dreamcast was crack dude that’s why it flopped. I own one on release. And found out 8-9 weeks later it got cracked. Saturn was hard to crack. Cause it was so hard for developers to program for. Know one would touch it. And it flopped.

Don’t get me wrong I love Sega. But the make so many stupid decisions. Wasting money in the VR system. To running 3 projects at ones. 32x, Saturn, Jupiter. Witch were all 32 bit device. All cause the Japanese Sega didn’t like the Co of the usa Sega. Now there losing money cause of crap mobile apps.
And another stupid decision was when sony went to Nintendo to make a console they knock them back. And so did Sega. Sega was dieing like wtf. Now segas gone and Nintendo made a powerful competitor.

But I love the idea as I said will buy

lol u wish it was cracked go try and find a WORKING emulator for the DC, none currently exist. like i said, literally with BOTH saturn and DC, you can’t find a working (100%) emulator, many can just play a hand full of games, n even THOSE barely play the original way. link some proof, if you truly believe there are any. because there aren’t. it’s the world of emus/roms. n EVERYONE knows 2 of the hardest emu’s to get working 100% right are the saturn and DC, n WHY! is because sega knew what it was doing. they made everything hard for the reasons of piracy.

you have no idea about segas actual “history” then if you think either system “flopped” maybe in your shit country (most likely in the usa) because you people just don’t appreciate shit and why sega STILL hasn’t given you all PSO 2 because the “western’ world is pretty much the MAIN reason why it hit the lows it did. go take a look at BOTH saturn and DC BOTH systems were still going on strong for about 2-3 years AFTER they “flopped” in places like USA, where they had exclusive titles still for those 2-3 years and why? because the asian market is just SMARTER! they KNEW what they had and they knew it was the better system. sega even shut people up at the end of it’s DC cycle by PROVING the DC could do what the ps2 and xbox could do by bringing shenmue 2 out on the DC (but again EXCLUSIVE to usa and uk) n when u look at it compared to xbox, it’s really not that much of a difference. so they “flopped” only because of MANY people actual ignorance on technology etc. look at the american market what is it MAINLY focused on? call of duties lmao assassins creeds etc. that’s why you people don’t GET good exclusives. MANY MANY things only in the JPN/ASN market. like i said look at PSO2 a game from sega and promised many years ago to eventually have a “western” release. why hasn’t it happened? because SEGA is AWARE YOU PEOPLE ARE UNGRATEFUL! and they’d just be losing out on money…….again. n not because pso2 is a bad product in anyway. it’s just because SADLY the majority of americans are close minded CoD shitheads. why would they waste the time n the money to translate the game, keep servers up etc, for what? only a hundred-ish people to support them? they’d LOSE MONEY! the reason it’s BEEN OUT IN JPN for YEARS NOW with even PS vita releases and i couldnt’ even count how many expansions, IS BECAUSE THEY KNOW! the jpn/asn market APPRECIATES the game n they can make money on it. that’s the “real” reason BOTH systems “flopped” because they didn’t “flop” in jpn in anyway, they BOTH went on years after and they went on strong, alot of great games came out (in jpn only) for both saturn and DC before they closed the curtain. so like i said provide links. trust me i have an amazing PC, n 100$ says anything u send me still won’t be 100% working and WHY! because NONE EXIST for BOTH the saturn and DC, they are hands down some of the hardest systems to “crack” in order to be emulated.

Sho, you do realize that there are currently emulators for the Dreamcast, right? Stop making a fool of yourself.

          1. Tom - November 12, 2017

Actually Sho brings up a couple valid points. The Saturn and the Dreamcast were quite successful in Asian regions. The main problem for Sega was the US market, because we were all impressed with the fact that PS2 could play DVD’s.

Dreamcast’s online capabilities were probably just as modern and impressive as PS2’s media functionality, but the technology wasn’t there yet– playing online back then meant you needed to either own a Broadband adapter, or you had to tie up your parents’ phone line with the dial-up connection.

A good amount of people here in the US loved the Dreamcast, but many didn’t (and still don’t). It’s true that many people just wanted to play games like FIFA, or Call of Duty or GTA. One REALLY discouraging thing to know is that the Dreamcast actually had Quake III Arena on which you could play online with other people, much like many modern first-person shooters. I don’t think many people took to it though. It’s also discouraging that the Dreamcast nearly had GTA 3 and Halo as an exclusive! Imagine if Sega had held out in the US a bit longer and got those games.

I think today people are becoming more open-minded to other genres and retro-inspired games, which is awesome. If the Dreamcast was made a couple years later with slightly newer tech, it could’ve been more relevant,

Look, “Closed Source” Has its ups and downs, please, try to make it open source! It DOSE NOT make it easier to pirate on, you can always use DRMs. Please w/o open source capibilities, this console will FLOP. Devs usually don’t want to work on consoles that are hard to develop for.

TheTurtleGamer Your comment makes sense, but closed source would be the way to go for business purposes, ESPECIALLY video game console purposes. Not many people are very fond of DRM, as you probably knew at the release of Sonic Mania. Closed source should be the way forward because it makes the hardware itself more secure without having to use any external media,

It’s a bit weird to me that in the year 2017 you guys are able to come up with the money to build a custom case and game controller, yet you somehow don’t have access to (or have the money to buy) at *bare minimum* a 1080p digital camera. All cell phones actually have that these days…

I’m not saying you’re trying to hide anything or fake this system, but it is *extremely simple* for anyone to download Gimp, scale down a digital photo to a lower resolution, then add a slight grain filter to make it appear like it was taken with a low-quality camera.

I just want to point this out to you guys, because anybody that’s smart who analyzes this post will look at this with a lot of skepticism still. Sorry.

And, just for the record, I really want to see this project succeed.

Hey Tommy, well I’m using a Hauwei P7 to take pics. It’s got horrible quality at low light conditions. Even though it takes the pics at 1920×1080, the grain is horrible. I understand your skepticism so hopefully in time we can alleviate that. 🙂

        Hi Chris!

I appreciate you taking the time to respond to me, that’s really cool of you. If I could offer a suggestion, it would be to post the full 1080p resolution pictures, even if they are grainy. Higher resolution with grain is still better than lower resolution and grain. The idea is to give an impression that leaves the viewer with as little skepticism as possible.

Also, just out of curiosity, how many of you guys are there? I’d really like to see the team behind this endeavor. You guys have been working really hard on this project, and you deserve to be recognized in my opinion. Thanks! :3

Hey Tommy, we’ll have a reveal of who’s involved in the project rather soon. Regarding the camera quality. You’re right and based on most of the feedback we made a mistake using a crud quality picture and then down-scaling it.

          1. Tommy O'Neil - October 25, 2017

            No problem Chris! 🙂

The P7 doesn’t take THAT poor of videos or images, but regardless anything is better than nothing, and the reason you gave us really flimsy at best. To be frank I’m having some “Smach-Z” vibes because there really isn’t any REAL progress being shown, outside of (what looks to be) a 3D printed Console with red LEDs and a controller, and then only having one Gif. So really anything is better than nothing.

I had a digital camera from 2003 that took pictures at way higher resolutions than 1920 by 1080.

Do you have actual proof of this? As I said in my original post, it’s very easy to fake things. You can totally just be spewing nonsense to get a rise out of people. At least the Spartan team have pictures, a full website, and they put actual effort into this for me to consider the possibility that they’re being truthful. No offense, but you’re just one guy posting in a comments section. 😛

You should release special editions of Spartan or cases that that look like the older consoles and even a couple scraped ones that can play the systems games. Here’s an example: the scraped Sega Neptune which was what the 32x was supposed to be. That can play that systems games while still being able to play what ever format Spartan plays. And 2 more things. I see the new controller model hasn’t been revealed, I’m slightly disappointed but it’ll take awhile. Also I think that switch like add-on is a pretty good idea.

The controller should be comfortable to hold.. those don’t look to be much comfortable to hold ( Idk maybe because I have small hands? just don’t make another original Xbox controller replica…. and yes.. make it feel COMFORTABLE to hold.. like um… I don’t know?)
Other than that.. this seems cool , but no offence but in anycase will this be anydifferent than latest Gen consoles? Like Ps4 ,etc.
I hope it has WiFi connection supported , with an Online Internet Service…(yes I would really like to make friends online and play online)
Good GUI ( Yes I saw The Alpha Spartan OS video on YT , the Gui menu , wasn’t bad… but I want it to look pretty..)
And the most important thing :
    Equality.
Well I mean … you know how the PS4 has Playstation Plus? and Xbox has Xbox live gold?
    Well guess what?
    This console shouldn’t.
This really pisses me off about Ps4 , (yes I own one) I can’t play online with my friends without buying Ps+. I mean who DOESN’T hate buying extra membership for ONLINE services….
And yes… I was wondering would there be remastered games?
Like Crazy Taxi , Sonic the Hedgehog ( improved textures ,art)
___Sorry for so many questions… I know you can’t answer all of them——
The onlything I want is the equality thing. If this console has online connectivity ( or soon) , it should have COMPLETELY free online service and with really GOOD seciurity good enough to prevent your account from getting hacked.. (my PSN account got hacked twice ) , and please… no BOTS…..

Take your time with it! Gah, I hope SEGA accepts this so that we can get some good ol’ franchise reboots. I think Shinobi, Altered Beast, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi 4K, Sonic 4K, and Shenmue 3 could be the biggest selling points of this console. Maybe even a collaboration with Valve to exclusively release Half-Life 3 on PC and Spartan, but I doubt Gabe Newell would give that up. Loving the look. A modern tech demo of a really old Sega I.p, reinvisioned. E.g Zillion as open world style third person shooter, with cell shading in order to imitate the production I.G. Anima of it. That would get Sega’s attention, now that they’re going with this with the whole amazing Sega thing.

Do like a short tech demo re-imagining of a game like Phantasy Star IV, for example. Something that is considered some of Sega’s best, but never seen on other consoles (no, PS Online doesn’t count). If this ends up a device where I can put in my Saturn disc, play the game, take it out, put in a dreamcast disk, play it as well then this console might have a good enough use case for me to get one. If it ends up needing an external disk drive I can live with that. The number one thing I’m hoping for is if the saturn emulation can be figured out to be pretty faithful. If Sega takes interest and shows them internal documents on the old system, then they may be able to make that a reality.

Yeah, it will be the killer function of this console. It really sucks that I can’t play my physical PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on my PS4. IF it’ll be RTM (ready to manufacture), I need backwards compatibilty with my physical copies of games, at least with the Saturn and Dreamcast emulation. It will be cool to put the Saturn CDs and Dreamcast BD-ROMs to play games. I hope that will become a reality.

Only issue with Dreamcast games (the official releases anyway), is they are GD-Roms. I would imagine that would take a considerable amount of extra R&D to recreate a design for GD-ROM laser mechanisms again..

To the extent you’re seeking Sega branding, I don’t think this captures Sega’s aesthetic. It looks too similar to other Steam Boxes or an Alienware machine. While it isn’t as quirky as Nintendo, Sega is definitely a Japanese company and its design choices follow that mindset. I understand you’re seeking Sega branding essentially to distinguish your small factor PC – but unless Sega starts licensing its name en masse to small factor PC makers, you’ll have to stand out in terms of design (as well as price, distribution, etc.).

My issue is, if I’m not wrong, it takes time to create games in general. Especially 4k games. With the specs being in the general area of the xbox one x, coming out in just about a month and a half a away, how could this system get the support it would need from 3rd party developers? Of Sega did sign off on it, it would take 2 to 3 years before they could make anything new for it. In that time, Microsoft will be hyping up the next version of their new system if the xbox ones lifespan is any kind of note lol.

The reason i ask, and i know it’s early but planning for long term success, i really really really want Sega back. Imo they were the only innovators of the gaming industry. They were just so far ahead of the times that people didn’t know what to do with anything they did. First cd system, first color handheld, who at the time knew having a modem in a system to jump on the internet was going to be a staple of gaming when the Saturn dropped?

I just feel like for this to work, and last, it would have to have the games to back it up Is all. Would love to play destiny 2 or 3 on this thing lol

That’s the main selling point, getting the right games on the Spartan. We’re not going to aim for a release too soon as there is a lot of work to be done. AND it’d be a mistake to try release at the same time Xbox or Playstation too.

I always wondered if Sega secretly is refraining from doing Sonic Adventure 3 until they have their own console again. That would be a great decision, to start out their re-entry into the console market with a bang.

Don’t listen to the youtubers’ negativity and don’t lose your time with them. I really like the idea of the Spartan.

Since it’s gonna have a disk drive you should focus 100% on the ability for the players to insert a SEGA CD / Saturn / Dreamcast disk into the drive and being able to play the old games through emulation (The spartan would extract the ROM/ISO and run it through an emulator). I’m sure that Sega would like that because:

    1. They allowed AtGames to do the exact same thing with the genesis flashback
    2. It would be like preserving the old games and give people an opportunity to enjoy them again at a better resolution and better frame rate

As far as the partnership with Sega goes you should try to seek something like AtGames currently has i.e. Sega allowing you to slap their logo on the console and licensing some games.

Please reply if you agree with these proposals so we know in which direction you’re going with this console 🙂

So this system is backwards compatible, right? Does this mean there will be some way to play our old cartridge games, or Dreamcast/Saturn disc games with either a slot/drive on the console, or an add-on to play those games? Or will the games only be downloadable? 😛

Hey Ekku-Chan, cartridges will be inserted into an external (add-on) cartridge slot. Games will be both downloadable and playable via disc.

I’m sure the Spartan will be accepted by Sega and officialized, because the ideas of the fans are highlighted and accepted, that’s already a big advantage, the communication with the fans is what will make the Spartan is well received.

    OrphanedPixel - November 3, 2017

First of all, I wanted to say that this concept seems interesting. There are a few things I think this console could do better and a few clarifications need to be made as well.

    1. This console looks like a generic Steam machine. That is not the look you should go for. Instead, you should go for a look with a similar level of uniqueness to the Sega Dreamcast without copying the Dreamcast’s aesthetic.

    2. Please show a picture of the back ports and the inside of the console. If you don’t, I can’t be sure that this isn’t a fake prototype.

    3. Will this have a good boot screen? As in one that has a similar feel to sixth generation console boot screens? That would be awesome!

    4. You said that there would be emulators for many Sega systems. I wanted some clarification here. You stated that there would be emulators for the Game Gear, Master System, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. First of all, are these the only consoles you’re emulating? Are you going to emulate systems like the SG-1000, the SG-1000 II, the SC-3000, the SF-7000, the Sega Pico, the Sega CD, the Sega 32X, those weird Sega CD32X games, the Sega AI Computer, the Sega Advanced Pico Beena, and Sega Dreamcast VMU games? What about WindowsCE (WinCE) functionality on the Dreamcast? How will you emulate it and get the licensing to use it? Will you be designing the emulators yourself in association with Sega? If not, what emulators will you use? Will all of these emulated systems be available at launch? Which ones? If not, when?

    If you reply, thank you.

      OrphanedPixel - November 3, 2017

In #4 I forgot to mention the SR-1000 which attached to the SC-3000 and allowed users to play games through cassette tapes, rather than though 3-inch floppy disks, as with the SF-7000. Will this be emulated as well?

    2. Reply
      Chris L - November 4, 2017

Hey OrphanedPixel, thank you for your feedback. To answer your questions:

      1. The design isn’t final 🙂 But it’s a direction. We haven’t used the Dreamcast as inspiration (even though it was beautiful) because we aren’t the same team as the team from Project Dream or Dreamcast 2. Your statement will definitely be taken into account for our next design in the future.
      2. The next update will have all that juiciness you asked for. 🙂
      3. You bet it will.
      4. For now we are only supporting the Game Gear, Master System, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. This will be done through external peripheral that work with cartridges and discs or downloadable content through an online store. Unfortunately we can’t answer any questions regarding Sega’s association as they have not yet endorsed this project and we have not put a proposal forward. All systems will be available to play at launch (IF Sega endorses our proposal).

most consoles that are out already have sega and Nintendo classics available

Sega Develops for all consoles. they aren’t going to give up getting loyalties from the masses to come out with one console format again. Now I now that you guys are going to criticize me and say that you guys are small still, and I know that I just want to say if you guys can make it more appealing to the eye. Maybe I can come up with a design but just saying i’m only 13 and cannot do it on the computer I would do it as an idea or just as a base. So if you could tell me your address maybe I could send you something. Many people are disliking the looks of your controller and maybe I could help but, asi I said before I am only thirteen and I am not a pro but maybe you could just consider it.

      1. The price point will be between the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X.
      2. As we are building the first prototype, our prototype is basically the only dev kit out. We are splitting development into 3 phases. Each phase will have an updated prototype. In the 3rd phase, we will be able to release dev kits as we will be closer the final console build.
      3. We’ll announce a simple way for users to be able to support us very soon. It won’t be crowd funding and people won’t need to donate anything.

I think you should try and incorporate the Sega Forever branding into the console. If you do that, you guys will be complimenting Sega’s current plans and strategy. If you show Sega that this can be the first game console that officially has Sega Forever games running on it, that may help spark their interest. That would also go along with your plan as well, because the strategy behind Sega Forever is to deliver all the classic Sega games to everyone.

I really think using Sega’s own current branding in the Spartan will really help get them to show some interest. Let me know what you think! 🙂

Just curious, I understand that concepts are about displaying the idea and not the final product or idea entirely. just curious if you all have other controller designs knocking around.

This is the design choice we preferred but with the second iteration we’re open to suggestions. 🙂

As Silver in Sonic Forces once said “I’m an optimist, but also a realist.” As much as I would love it to be the “Sega Spartan”, I can’t really imagine Sega to afford to make and mass-produce consoles again let alone want one thats mostly third-party built.

As for my oppinion on consoles apperance, while I do like the glowing feature, I think it looks a bit too rigid. Especially the controller. It’s hard to put into words how I feel about it other than it doesn’t look “Sega” to me, it looks like it’s trying to be sleek and “edgy” over Sega’s past consoles which were more rounded and “approachable”.
It’s as if the design was chosen for what appeals as a modern console instead of why Sega consoles were appealing to begin with. Sega consoles have basic designs with curves that gave it makes it appear interesting and welcoming than trying to look too cool and edgy. It’s a console, not a decked-out gamers PC.
Being inspired by past Sega consoles would be critically ideal for designing an eighth generation console given the Nintendo Switch has ditched the Wii-U’s curved appeal for a more basic, black slab like design while the XBox One and PS4 adopt more black-square like designs. A console that not as blak, square or rigid and appears more like a grey Sega Saturn or a white Dreamcast will be more attractive to the eyes and stand out more.
Still I like the glowing feature, it makes what makes the console unique stand out more and can serve as an indicator for various hardware conditions.

As for the controller I can tell was inspired by the XBox 360 controller with the rigid Spartan design. Instead what if it was an XBox 360 controller with a Dreamcast controller like design and feel? Give players all the functionality for an XBox360 controller but feel like holding a Saturn or Dreamcast controller?
And while this is the least of my concerns that should bother me, but ditch the XBox colours for the controller buttons. Maybe go with japanese Sega Saturn controllers colouring of buttons? Or if it’s going to remain just 4-button controller, go with Dreamcast button colours instead. This way when the console plays Sega Saturn or Dreamcast games the button order may remain faithful.
I know such a minor thing shouldn’t bother me, but as I said this console feels more like it’s own console than a Sega console. PlayStation and XBox stuck with it’s colours co-ordinations since they began their console series, so a (potential) Sega console should do the same?

Still these are just my oppinions on it. While I doubt Sega would accept Sparta or make any consoles anytime soon, I am still hopeful as anyone who grew up with Sega.

We’re dividing the development of this project into 3 phases. Each phase will have a reiterated design. Sega’s designs are far less rigid that’s for sure so that’s a direction we’ll move towards.

The revised controller design has 6 buttons. The button colors have certainly changed.

I would love if the Spartan can play Blu-ray discs and have Bluetooth option, especially with the classic SEGA controllers coming out with Bluetooth. Plus, can it have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, YouTube, and Twitch.

A blu-ray disc player will be introduced in the second design iteration of the console. 🙂 Including Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Video is something we’ll only consider after all gaming aspects of the prototype have been fleshed out and created. Our primary focus is to make this a gaming device, so Youtube streaming and Twitch streaming will be included from the go.

Are you going to develop a handheld alternative to the Spartan as well? I really like portable game consoles like the Nintendo Switch. Also, have you contacted Murasaki and The Great Lange about Sonic Utopia? That would be the perfect launch title!

Portability is important and our next phase may lean more towards a portable device.

We’ve looked into it but the handheld won’t be developed alongside the main prototype home console. It’s something we’ll only consider if the main console gets the go ahead.

Just to Say , Best D-pad ever “Sega Saturn” i would love to see a D- Pad like that again. The 6 buttons will be like 3 + 3 Like ABC XYZ ? I would like to see a VMU again, but this time the VMU with battery that supply the controller, then you can take it out and play classic games in it “Sonic , Streets of Rage, etc” .
If we are Dreaming let’s Dream BIG.

I hope to see your console on the market. I have a theory that more consoles on the market would give the giants more competition. I believe it is the competition that makes the makers of consoles build better consoles. With three major systems maybe a fourth if Atari stays around. Just seems quality has went down. If there was more competition amongst the leading makers maybe prices would come down a tad. Have a great day.

It’s now nearing the end of January, and there’s still no update on the project? That’s pretty alarming guys.

I’m starting to grow more skeptical about the Spartan console as each day passes without any new content showing the machine in action, or the controller. It’s starting to look more and more like an Ataribox or Coleco Chameleon kind of situation. Aside from being a month late for the third update, Sega and Retro-bit’s partnership actually has me more excited than this does, which is bad.

If you guys would like some feedback, here it is:

    1) Plan better so there’s always consistent updates on the site. If things don’t go according to plan and you don’t have everything you want for a large-scale update, release a smaller update. I also noticed that your Facebook, YouTube and Instagram accounts have content that aren’t on the website. I would’ve posted that content here as an update.

    2) Don’t release downscaled, grainy pictures if you have the capability to post higher-res pictures. You mentioned before that the camera used to take these initial pictures is of low quality. But I checked the model that you mentioned, and it DOES in fact take 1080P images. Post the full-size images online please.

    3) The 4K Sonic game shouldn’t be demoed to us as a GIF animation. That’s silly. Post a full YouTube clip that’s in full 4K if the demo really IS 4K like you claim.

Sorry if I sound harsh here guys, but for as late as the third update is, you had this kind of comment coming to you. Hope you can improve so my attitude towards this can change. :/

      Maybe this will change your mind;
There’s been a lot of trouble in our country as of late. There is civil unrest and the city where out office is based is going to be the first city in the world to run out of water. So we’ve had members emigrating and it’s likely that we’ll be moving our offices abroad too.

If what you’re saying is in fact the truth, then I really honestly apologize for that and hope you guys are able to recover from it.

At the same time though, is there any solid proof that you have for what you’re saying here? The reason why I feel skeptical is because every “Dreamcast 2” project, or any kind of proposal that has attempted to bring Sega back into the console business has always failed for one reason or another. This just seems like those other projects right now.

I really do apologize, but that’s what it’s coming off like dude… Again, if you ARE indeed being truthful with me here, I hope you guys are able to recover and succeed with this thing. But at the same time, how do we know you’re *really* based in South Africa? It’s just really hard to believe anymore…

We understand your frustration. Development hasn’t stopped, it has just temporarily slowed down. Even if Sega doesn’t take it. We can still turn this into something.

This almost looked promising. Is there no way old and new games could be put on a small network of servers so they can be downloaded onto the console through the O.S.

Hey Spartan team. I am excited for updates on this but I wanna warn you. You have to think like a perfectionist and be a perfectionist when making this. Keep in mind that when you are pitching this system to Sega, you might also have to present it to Sega of Japan. In the 90s SOJ had a hostile relationship to SOA and they still have some communication problems to this day. You will be pitching a next gen console and you have to make it polished and focused. Most importantly, you have to appeal to Japanese gamers. You HAVE to. Look at where the Xbox flopped. The design of the hardware, controller, and name just did not fly with Japan. Observe how Nintendo and Sony’s systems attract a worldwide audience and take notes from that. Also, try to diversify the console with the competition. Try and keep up the theme and “feel” of Sega consoles in the past, along with their brand in general. Make it feel different from the Xbox One X or the PS4 or Switch. Lastly, polish up the OS system. This is the heart and soul of your console and although its running on Linux now, you may want to distance yourself from that in the future.

Also try and improve your overall presentation of the site and social media accounts. Professional photos and videos would be appreciated and your “sign up” email leads to the wrong web domain.

    Good luck.

The nest generation of console (PS4, Xbox 2) will have a 6 or 8 GB graphic card. I suggest you to remove the 4GB GPU and add a 8GB GPU or more powerfull or a console that the users could change and replace few composants like RAM memory and GPU like a PC and launch the console a year ago the next generation to make the sucess of the genesis and do a mondial exit of a console not only on dev country like Europa, Japan and USA but on the BRICS.

I suggest you to replace the 4GB GPU for a 8 GB GPU and this GPU like The RAM Memory could bechange by the user. Your console have to export the console not only on dev countries like Europa, USA or Japan but to sort the console on Russia, China, India, Brazil and south africa where they have billions potential users and I advice you to delivery the console a year ago the Xbox 2 and PS4.
And do a controler that could change to a handheld console which will be less powerfull than the spartan.
