Spartan Controller and Sonic 4K tech demo

Welcome to the very first update of the Spartan console. On a bimonthly basis we’ll bring you news on the hardware and software that’s running on the Spartan.

The Spartan console is a proposal to bring Sega back into the console market. We have a working prototype and photos/videos will be released soon of the working console. Our aim is to be backwards compatible with previous gen Sega games via an online store. Be sure to sign up to our newsletter to get more updates.

Today we’ve got news about:

  • The new Spartan controller.
  • A brand new tech demo we’re developing called, Sonic 4K (the name is temporary)
  • A render and news on the new console design.

The Spartan controller.

Sega Spartan controller gamepad

The controller has an overall matte finish and since comfortably in the hands. Because of this finish, you can still fortunately hold on to the controller even if your hands are sweaty as hell.

It has the following features:

  • A TURBO button (because that is a worthy feature).
  • Rumble motors.
  • 50 hour battery life.
  • 7 – 10 meter range.
  • White and Black versions will be available.
  • More features will be added…

There will be various colours available after the initial release as well as clip on grips and skin. There’ll be more updates on the controller in the coming weeks.

The Sonic 4K Tech Demo

Yup, you read that right. We’re preparing to show off the hardware with a graphically rich open world Sonic demo game which will be running at 4K. Look at this juicy gif snippet below.

There will be a full video released in the next update.

The Spartan console case design

What’s currently happening is that the case has been designed and the first case is finalising being made. It’s literally 1 or 2 days before it arrives at my doorstep. THEN I’ll put the parts all together and BANG! We have our first prototype.

Yes, this is another 3d render of a mean looking console but don’t go away! In the next update there’ll be pictures of the actual console!

In the next update, there will be details on SpartanOS, photos (maybe a video) of the console running and a Sonic 4K video!

Any idea how much it’ll be retail and if it’ll run unity? I was working on indie game for wii u but might make on spartan too.

I’m happy to let you know that there will be a Unity plugin to export to Spartan. 🙂 As for the retail price… I’m not in a position to disclose that yet. 🙁

sega is not going to want this to be os there going to have it closed to there own store and if you argue they never actually want to produce this thats my problem and that makes me scared because then it might not even take it beecuse there just focused on money like every big company Now heres a better idea they have you be able to download from steam or segas own store

Hey Neo, you’re right. We’re just building a prototype to show Sega what can be done. If they accept this then they can do what they please with the OS.

Then that dream won’t become our reality so do what you want not what anyone else tells you to do

What we are looking for is a return of an updated VMU.That is what would make it different from other consoles. Also make the VMU rechargeable and give it a touch screen. With that on the controller it adds new gameplay elements to games.

We dont need 4 butons in the shoulder, only 2. All game industry is wrong with this layout(psone culprit).

Don’t get me wrong, it’s been a long time coming for a game-dedicated console to come out, but I honestly wouldn’t mind it to have compatibility for apps such as Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, Twitch, Youtube, etc. If this has any intention of competing with the modern market, it HAS to have some form of access to other media outside of gaming, even if it’s minimal.

With the ever growing console market. You might want to think about having an optional portable accessory because of the switch and Sony’s recently filed a patent for Something similar. With the main console itself, I’d recommend you have an optional stand to make it vertical like the ps2 and Wii. With the controller, some people are going to instantly draw similarities to the Xbox one controller, I’d recommend making the grips smaller and making the width slightly bigger. As you post updates on Spartan ill keep sending recommendations.

We do have a vertical stand. As for the controller, that is going under a huge revamp.

You might want to add (2) more face buttons too in the controller revamp, if you want this console to live up to the stated “backwards compatible with previous gen SEGA games”– because some of the best SEGA games were on the Genesis and Saturn with their 6-button controllers, which were better than their competitor’s 4-button layouts.
Get it done Spartan, and you’ll have more industry support and hyped belief that this is actually happening. And SEGA might actually take your prototype serious, demonstrating that you are covering all the bases and not half-assing your design.

          1. Chris L - October 22, 2017

OK seriously why does this look like an xbox controller? However, at least you have the A, B buttons in the correct place unlike nintendo. Anyway, invert the Dpad and analog stick for gods sake. I know most people dont think about this but symmetry is important

      Chris L - October 5, 2017

Ergonomically the Xbox controller has the best layout. This has been researched and tested from dozens of users. Fortunately, it’ll be possible to create a symmetrical controller with the analog sticks inline. 🙂

How do you see the process of bringing games to the console looking, will it be a matter of accuring just the rights for the classic conent and indie support or do you see the possibility of actual new Sega content support.

I’m sure that’s a ways away, just wanted an idea what the plan was since your getting closer to that point.

This console serves as a proposal to Sega. There’s nothing official yet. The infrastructure for new developers to come on board is currently happening. We’re planning on getting exporters setup for Unreal Engine and Unity. So indie devs can have fun. As for new Sega content and older classic games, there will be more info coming on that.

Am I the only one who is missing the nostalgia effect here?
With all due respect, and not trying to diminish all the hard work that has been involved here, this project strikes me as it lost focus on bringing a Dreamcast successor.

This looks like a fine new console, but not like I imagined a Dreamcast 2 would be. Is more like an Xbox 2.

Dreamcast is a beautiful, noble console and deserves to have a successor that honors it.

What would I like to see:
    – White! (I mean, it should really be white)
    – Dreamcast logo? Anywhere?
    – Smaller maybe…

Please don’t tell me you are using all the fuzz created by a “New Dreamcast Console” to merchandise your own completely different console.

    1. Reply
      Chris L - October 5, 2017

This is a proposal for a new generation Sega console. Sega themselves didn’t seem to be a fan of releasing consoles with numbers assigned to them. Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast and hopefully Sega Spartan.

This is NOT a “Dreamcast Successor”. Sure you could play previous gen games on it, but it’s a new console.

If all works out, there’ll be a white version. As this is not a successor, the Dreamcast logo won’t be used.

        Jacob - October 5, 2017

Hopefully everything works out. Hopefully the backwards compatibility is solid and you guys get licensed correctly for everything. I figure since the original hardware used in the Dreamcast is unavailable for production it’ll probably be based on emulation of the original console, and possibly other older generation ones as well? Also any word on a time frame to expect Dev kits to be sent out and allowing developers to program for the platform? I’m hoping this gets enough backing to get great games out of the box, and several amazing launch titles. Too many projects die without great momentum out of the gate(Looking at you, Ouya).

Will you allow/receive console design submissions?
Surely, it would be greater to tap the talent from the larger gaming community and fanbase, instead of limiting yourself to just in-house talent for console design.
This way, you could see some truly inspired designs, and maybe compile a collective of various submission’s features into one cohesive beautiful SEGA console that even SEGA would be hard-pressed to resist going forward with a project like this.
Don’t get me wrong, your current design is OK, but not so great that it would win over everyone to make that jump in purchasing a potential gamble of a console. And, don’t forget that this is how we got the excellent Sonic Mania– SEGA allowed the same creative contributions from the game programming community, showing what they really wanted from a “good” Sonic game. And SEGA might like to know that you employed the same tactic of “play-testing” gaming community designs that are visually appealing to the larger community and most marketable.
I’m a designer, and long time die-hard SEGA fan. And have made several SEGA-console-dedicated custom arcade cabinets, and would be more than happy to submit some appealing designs that have both SEGA’s design DNA, yet contemporary next-gen.

The name Spartan sucks, I’m sorry, but Sega would’ve never picked a name like that. Sega always went for console names that set the course for a new horizon, something of otherworldly (Saturn) or Biblical proportions (Genesis) or future-thought (Dreamcast). But Spartan? Yeah, that’s not going to go over well and you’ll see soon enough.

That said, if this isn’t a successor to a Sega console then piggybacking off the Dreamcast 2 hype is deceptive, 1. Because that failed it’s widely considered a hoax/waste of time, and 2. Because this isn’t a Dreamcast 2. Those two things alone are going to hurt your project’s public perception from the beginning.

i have to agree with the name thing, honestly, that name does not fit a SEGA console, it actually would be perfect for a new XBOX. as said by Max Sedenka, it should be something more epic, like SEGA Ragnarok, or Ymir (referencing norse mythology) or some japanese mythology like SEGA Raiden, fujin, Gama. or related to physics like infinity, lambda, matrix, etc. im just giving ideas of the top of my head, i just think spartan sounds too vulgar and non inspiring.

From another perspective, a Spartan soldier was a strong and feared warrior. According to wikipedia: At the height of Sparta’s power – between the 6th and 4th centuries BC – it was commonly accepted that “one Spartan was worth several men of any other state.” You see where we’re going here? 😀

As a long die-hard SEGA fan, I think that Spartan is very appropriately “SEGA” in style for a console name.
Don’t forget that SEGA had very much used the name Katana, Naomi, Nomad, Neptune, and Pluto as hardware and project names. And more in theme, SEGA used Titan and Janus as project names, and also gave us the game “Spartan”: Total Warrior.
So, as long as the console has a good design, I think the gaming community and SEGA fan base would be more than accepting of the console name “Spartan” if it is given SEGA’s approval.

I disagree with most folks here. I think SEGA is lucky to have projects such as Spartan available to jump into production with or not. It’s not perfect. Sure, the name is out of scheme. That doesn’t bother me most about the name though, I mean, companies do break schemes.. AND if SEGA likes it, but says they would want it names something different, that’s an easy alteration in both the OS and on the physical design. My biggest issue with the name is simply that it is reminiscent of Halo, which is not from Sega. That said, while accepting that this is not exactly perfect yet, it’s a hell of a lot better than any of these whiny folks could come up with. This team is dumping their own funding into this dream. It’s a cool concept. They’re doing all the real legwork. All SEGA has to do is say, “hey, this is close. We can make this happen”, and this console can go into production. I’m sure it would see design and OS revisions. The whole point is that a new SEGA console could in fact become a reality, thanks to fans like this. If they don’t bite, the Spartan team can still easily drop the SEGA push, and get this out anyway assuming the tech specs are on par. Sometimes people want something different. Best of luck devs.

I’m onboard with Hecubus on the name of the console, even though sega was always known for being different and edgy, The Spartan does seem too close to the XBox. Maybe something continuing the space theme that Sega had been using on past consoles. Master System was an arcade system that played all arcade games. Genesis was the beginning. Then you got the planets, (or rockets, depending on how much about space u know and look at it) some of them only being prototypes, like the Mars, Neptune and Pluto. Maybe something along the lines of the Sega Galaxy, or going back to space exploration, something like the Sega Challenger.

Whilst I support the concept wholeheartedly that has led to this development I have to to say the console/pad design is pretty ghastly and not to my taste. The name isn’t either and it doesn’t particularly look very Sega-ish but rather like an original Xbox console reboot. However I still wish you well with the project, perhaps I am in the minority.

You know, Scotty-boy, you kinda remind me of this guy I had butted heads with on DeviantArt. He’s 16 years old, goes by the handle of RyanRoberts, and he makes these lame Sonic the Hedgehog multi-crossovers and putting himself in them as a character.

And you know what this guy crosses Sonic over with?

Sailor Moon (as part of a little something he calls “Ryan and the Sailor Moon Helpers”)
        Power Rangers
        Hi-5 (Australian children’s show)
        Magical Doremi
Guitar Hero (as part of a made-up Guitar Hero game)

He would come up with these made-up TV shows, video games, and movies, that he claims are “all-in-one” and that he “invented” them and are “not fan made”. He is also naive as to think that if he tells the companies about his ideas that they would automatically accept them and make them into actual TV shows, movies, and video games.

But the annoying thing about him is how he handles negative criticism. He acts like a big baby about negative criticism, especially if it’s towards his fan made stuff. He would turn on the critic, telling them that they’re “spoiling his study”. The study bit comes from the fact that he calls himself the “study boy” and that he “studies anything, including stuff for the future”. He also hates it when someone criticizes him for that aforementioned “big baby” behavior. He actually blocked me at one point or another.

He also likes to claim that he’s not out of his mind and that everyone else is for not knowing any better about his stuff.

The point is, you can’t handle negative criticism for beans, not even refried beans with cheese mixed with garlic salt! You have no respect towards anybody that criticized that Sonic Adventure 3 wishlist of yours that included your made-up characters. If that’s not the most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen in this comments section, I’m not sure what is!

Sounds like you guys are late to the party though, Atari is already a few steps ahead of you with the AtariBox, and that box already has Atari backing it, officially. And people are burying that console, for various reasons. Why do people think it’s a good idea to enter the console market without any access to physical media? You can’t compete with the big three using a Steambox, when will people learn? No one wants another Steambox. You’re going to need a bluray drive on the final product for people to even see this as a legitimate alternative to the Xbox, Playstation, and Switch. If you try the whole PC in box, without an optical disk drive, you will fail.

      Just-in - October 17, 2017

The Ataribox was made by Atari so they didn’t need approval (I hope that makes sense)

As for the Steambox (Its called the Steam Machine) it doesn’t have any exclusives which kind of made it pointless. If SEGA does approve the Spartan I’m sure there smart enough to have SEGA games be exclusive to it that way it can compete with other gaming systems.

As for physical media I wouldn’t be surprised that it doesn’t exist (or at least isn’t very popular) by the time Spartan comes out. I happened to music and movies so it will definitely happen to consoles.

        The Blizz - October 17, 2017

Quite frankly, I wouldn’t buy a system if it DIDN’T come with a means to read physical media.

I prefer to get games on physical media (be they cartridges, optical discs or flash cards) and to be able to play them directly off the medium they come on. That way, I can save my hard drive space for stuff like DLC, digital only titles, game capture videos (should the option exist) and so on.

Microsoft made the mistake of forcing all Xbox One disc titles to be downloaded to the hard drive in order to play them, taking up valuable hard drive space in the process. I’m just glad that Sony and Nintendo didn’t follow suit, and I can only hope that the Spartan (working title or not) dev team (and, hopefully, SEGA, should they decide to invest in the system) also avoid straying down that path.

According to the Q&A they aim to price it “somewhere between the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X” so it its budget. What makes it different to a PC will likely be its exclusives that’s the only thing that home consoles have going for nowadays,

      1. Reply
        Chris L - October 17, 2017

What also makes it different to a PC is the fact that this isn’t a box with off the shelf parts thrown inside. The only thing that’s changeable in here is the hard drive (for now). Otherwise, the board inside was printed and built from scratch.

You’ve designed your own motherboard? For something equivalent to a modern PC or console!?!? Wouldn’t you need a dozen well-paid experts to do that? People just don’t do 8-layer PCB design in their bedrooms, especially with all the weird requirements modern RAM and buses have.

It would cost a few million to design something as complex as you describe. I assumed this was just basically a case for PC hardware.

Unlike the OUYA, we do plan on having support for external media. Even peripherals to play older games. Instead of a disc drive, SD cards will be utilized for newer gen games. SD Cards are faster than discs and more durable in general.

The OUYA was a complete failure because it’s game library was a mess. It just ran a beefed up Google Play Store.

SD Card technology in a proprietary shell and format, right? Like Switch cartridges? Because using regular SD Cards would be a major problem when it comes to piracy.
Expandable memory using external hard drives, flash drives, and SDXC Cards are all well and good, but the game cartridges should remain proprietary.

If you somehow make this run the physical versions of SEGA CD games, SEGA Saturn games, and Dreamcast games as well as making it $500 or less and giving me time to save money, this is a DAY ONE purchase for me! Also what would make it a day one purchase is SEGA branding, I really hope they work with you on this! (Also if you want millions of Sonic fans to buy this console, make a well polished remake of SA1 as well as making a new boost style game and Classic Sonic game like Mania.)

  52. Reply
    Daniel Tomley - October 17, 2017

designs and names aside, what do you think will make SEGA interested in your project? It seems you are doing all the leg work in the hopes that sega may stick their branding on it.

Also sega has deals with Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony. So Sega games could not launch exclusively on the Spartan. Sega would lose a lot of money this way and i dont believe they would be willing to to take a big risk at this point.

If you are basing this on nostalgia it will fail, if you try to compete with the already 3 established ways of playing games at home, it will fail. Also understand you can play many sega games on home consoles already or just emulate them for free using almost any controller.

For me to be interested it would have to offer something unique (other than old roms) and Software that i could ONLY play here.

I wish you all the best (even though this sounds negative, it comes from a place of love)
I will keep an eye on your progress with great interest.

This looks really promising and I hope it will be finished and released officially. However I don’t like the Controller… Why are the back-buttons called “R1”, “R2”, “L1” and “L2”? It’s too much like the Playstation-Controller, maybe instead use some other names for those buttons… And it would be awsome to have A, B, X and Y Buttons along with the Z and C Buttons! It would make the Controller really outstanding and also easier to play some Sega Mega Drive/Genesis/CD/32X-games. And what about the Saturn-games? Do they work on the console? This is the thing that was always the problem, no one could make those games work on an emulator, as far as I know.
And what about Dreamcast-games that have VMU-extras? Will there be a way around, like an mobile phone-app or an extra VMU-like device? It would be awsome of course!

Other then that I really love the idea and can’t wait to spend my money for that! Good Luck!

First off I have a question is the Sonic 4K Tech Demo using Hedge Physics? (Just curious)

Also I thinking that you should have a 1080p version which is cheaper and for people which can’t afford a 4K TV.

You should also have a 720p handheld version for around the price of 1080p version which can play the same games. I’m sure if you wanted to you could make it 1080p but I think that would make the battery life longer which would make it better for long trips compared to the Nintendo Switch.
With better battery life, a cheaper price (no motion controls, dock, Joy-Con straps etc), more power (more 3rd party games) it could possibly beat the Nintendo Switch as the better handheld gaming system.

    1. Reply
      Chris L - October 17, 2017

For the base mechanics of the tech demo, Hedge Physics is being used.

There has been a lot of thought put into creating a handheld kind of Switch device. A couple of prototypes were thrown together but that’s still far off for now. It’s not to say it won’t happen.

Hi it would be handy if you could connect an eternal hard drive dock via usb 3.1 or 3.0 that can allow you to slot in 2.5″ and 3.5″ SATA hard drives. You know the ones I’m talking about ? They can be used on PC’s and I believe Xbox One’s as well. Maybe PS4’s as well. It’s a useful way to bump up the consoles memory without opening it up. Also you can put much larger hard drives as well. For example you could buy a cheap used 3.5″ 3TB for around $60 to $80 and then slot it into the dock and then BOOM you’ve got tons of extra space !! I Love the idea of this console and I think it could succeed if done right and not rushed.

Hi Chris. Ok thank you. that’s really nice to know ! I am also wondering if you will be putting USB 3.1 or USB 3.0 ports on the Spartan ? I like that Sony put USB 3.1 ports on the PS4, which I feel was a great move as it’s two times faster than USB 3.0 which only transfers data at 5 gigabits per second. So the USB 3.1 transfers at 10 gigabits per second. That makes a huge difference ! I wish that Nicrosoft had put the USB 3.1 on the Xbox instead of USB 3.0 . Thanks for your kind response. I’m gonna throw my two cents out there and give this project some critique, but first what is this aiming to be? Is this going to be a new SEGA Console, a SEGA branded Steam Machine, or something closer to the Ouya? I’m gonna assume console, but its looking to fall more in line with the Ouya.
SEGA has to be able to market this, and be able to make money off of game sales, which a completely open market would kinda get in the way of, although some kind of protection on official games would combat that, and allow for an open market. Just be careful if you’re going that route, DRM is hard to do right. An open source OS, however, would open the piracy floodgates completely. Trust me, SEGA has had trouble with piracy in the past, and would probably have you change it.
In order to market it to the public, beyond the initial ~35,000 people already signed on, it needs big name exclusives, beyond just Sonic. I highly advise towards the revival of loved, but seemingly abandoned SEGA IP, like Streets of Rage, or Jet Set Radio. At the current stage, it doesn’t have to go farther than a prototype to pitch to SEGA alongside the console, it’ll also show them how serious you guys are about the project.
As an additional bit of critique, the controller needs a bit of work in the visual department. It resembles the legendary boomerang controller a bit too much. Also, a 6 face button set up would allow for a greater deal of compatibility with Genesis and Saturn games. using the shoulder buttons just isn’t the same. (Plus it would make it the best controller for emulation when used on a computer, a lot of things used the 6 button set up.)

We’re aiming to create a new console. This is not just a pc with off the shelf parts. We’ve had a custom board printed and the only interchangeable part is basically the hard drive. The plan is to support downloadable games and games on external media. It really doesn’t need to go further than a prototype to get this pitch off the ground. 🙂

Alright. I’ve looked through here some more and retract my statements about the open sourceness of the console. However, I must stress the importance of a 6 button controller. In addition to allowing Genesis and Saturn fans to use their muscle memory, it’ll help set the console apart from its competition. I also noticed that the triggers don’t appear to be analog. SEGA has a long history of racing games, and analog triggers really help give the full range of control one would expect from a car. I would also recommend looking into gyro aiming, but for all I know that’s already integrated.
Of course, all this would also help sell additional controllers for the sake of PC Gaming, since it’ll have the full range of control of almost every traditional controller, including oddities like the N64 Controller.

You stated that the OS will be: “Spartan OS is semi open source” and that “Spartan OS was built from the ground up. We’ve poured our hearts into creating our own OS.”. In a post you said that the core will be locked up. In other words this will no be an open source OS. Been able to download your games or play them on external media has nothing to do with open source. Best example is MS Windows. I can download freeware games and play them from an external SSD but the OS is most certainly not open source. Using Open Source as a marketing trick is at best unethical. As for your second claim, while it might be technically possible to write an OS from zero allow me to remind you that even Google (now Alphabet, but whatever) using the Linux Kernel for Android. If you have been able to do what a colossal company wasn’t able and since it is open source please create a github account and post the code. It might actually help you get feedback from the community about bugs and possible improvements and of course to prove your earlier claims.

If you have the ability to play older games.. why not call it Generation. With the sega brand that would clearly fit.in to future generations and past

It would also fit well for marketing… “This is.. the Sega Generations”… “welcome to Sega Generations. The future of gaming”… “the past .. the future.. of generation’s to come” but hey what do i know… hope all goes well on the project im keen to try it

Uhh… I don’t think SEGA will approve of Sonic 4K. There’s already Sonic Forces. Sega moved on a long time ago though I do think that the killing the Dreamcast early was downright cruel. It should’ve been January 31, 2004 instead of March 30, 2001. The Sega Saturn should’ve lived a little bit longer. Just have it as only a tech demo. Just let the system only for classic gaming and just only backwards compatibility, no new games, just all old. Let’s just see what they think of it. I’m pretty sure they are not going to approve but we shall see in the future. They’ll probably just resurrect a console instead as a miniature replica and have games loaded in it instead. Just have this for only Sega’s previous games from 1983 to 2002/2007 (for Japan).

In other words Sonic Utopia likely inspired Hedge Physics which is being used to create Sonic 4K

looks like a third party controller…..not impressed, not to mention, it’s gonna flop because, HOW is SEGA going to make money off of a products that will be more exclusive to indie developers for the product. Sega needs to be able to make money off their own games . Just another “Steam” Box. You want most emulators running? Get you a raspberry Pi3 B or a stronger built “SBC”. IF it gets saturn working (which till now has been a no go) that will be impressive, but not worth buying this. Make your own emulator box. SEGA has gone far off the loop to not only keep up with current gen consoles ( Prime example is what SEGA pushes through the Ios Market). If they can’t properly port games to new tech. What makes you think they will here?
I may sound a bit exaggerate or Ignorant, it’s my own opinion (figure that). Just some standard business knowledge, Working with Xbox. Profitability would be so marginal that no company will back it up. This is why all these boxes fail every time. Fascinating product none the less from a consumer standpoint. Business ethical standpoint, makes no sense.
Lastly, I hope I am wrong.

Just no. First thing that bothers me is the name, Spartan. Really? So what comes first into my mind when i hear name Spartan…hmm. Master Chief…Halo…Spartan! Yes. HALO. Or John Spartan from Demolition Man. Name is all WRONG. It has no sega vibe in it at all. Next thing that bothers me is the design. It’s butt ugly. Sorry. I would not want ugly piece of hardware like that to ruin my living room. Look at PS2, PS4 or Xbox 1 S. They are pretty. The firxt Xbox was ugly as hell too. Third: The controller, it looks like a Xbox 1 controller knock-off. You even have the letters in same places, you know what that means. A lawsuit from microsoft. You even have the same colors. You know, there is a reason why xbox switched the letter placements from Snes controller.

Then the hardware. 4GB VRAM and 4K gaming. What was your intended FPS? 25? Please. Just rather focus on getting stable 60fps 1080p games first. 16GB ram? Are you serious? This whole thing seems more like a joke than serious console effort. There is a reason why it takes several years to design a console, launch it etc. from large companies.

Also the market is already struggling with 3 consoles. What can this console offer than other consoles cannot? Old sega games? Oh wait, i just start my emulator on my pc. This is a horrible, horrible idea. Just ditch it. Trust me, i’ve been gaming for 30 years and worked several years in gaming industry (import and game stores) .

Change the name, change the desing, make this “spartan” just an emulator console like Mini NES classic / Snes classic and propose that to sega. No

Regarding the VRAM, that’s something that hasn’t been finalised and are looking into increasing. 🙂 And the controller is not final, based on the feedback we’ve got from the community, we’re going to be revamping it.

AND just FYI. The letter placement of the Xbox controller were taken from the Dreamcast controller. The Xbox controller itself was actually inspired by the DC controller.

Sega will approve of this, this is exactly what they need to come back into the hardware game. just make sure you’re not trying to “take” control of their company kind of thing lol and i don’t see them having issues with this. if this is an “idea” or proposal to them. Pretty sure they would take it. could you imagine. like what nintendo has currently with switch and all that. they have the old virtual library. so just imagine a place for us sega fans. a store that just has “new” games and old sega classics. that’d be amazing. i support this idea 100% and with the first tech demo being of sonic, i don’t see why sega would say no unless you guys make some outrageous offers to them. just looking at this on paper (so-to-speak) there should be no reason they say no n make this happen. I will def support it if Sega does. i’ve been wanting another sega console for years, and if i can play shenmue 3 on another sega console (like how i was able to play the original 2 on my dreamcast) that would make me really happy, was upset that i’d be playing it on a ps4 (pretty much the company responsible for making sega get out of the hardware aspects) so that was upsetting but of course i need to play shenmue 3 so backed it up and now just waiting but if this comes out i’d swap out my backer order for a spartan version of the game over a ps4 version anyday. good luck to you guys and i hope you can get segas helps to make this a dram come true!

I remember when I had a similar concept to what you guys were doing. It was basically the same concept, but I had much different ideas. I had commercial pitches and everything for it, but the project I had never really came to fruition because of school and other restraints, but I’m glad to see others coming through with what I could not. I was going to call it the SEGA Phoenix, and the name was symbolic as SEGA has burned to the ground in recent years, and the Phoenix rising from the ashes symbolizes the return of a console titan. As for the commercial pitch, I was going to have the famous Segata Sanshiro rising from a grave with a fist of flame, then the Phoenix logo. It was going to be so awesome, but I am just one guy and couldn’t do it on my own. Now that I see you guys doing the same and trying to revive a brand that I held dear in my heart, I fully support this and I hope I can be a part of it in some way. I will be more than happy to donate necessary funds needed and give some ideas of mine that I had. Good luck, guys! Hope SEGA gives this the greenlight!

I thinks it comes down the the kinds of games being released on it. Directional buttons are better for 2D games while analog sticks are better for 3D games.

As for online polls its quite difficult to get a definitive answer. For example the PS4 controller may of won because the PS4 has sold better. This means that most people in the poll may of been more use to the PS4 controller than the Xbox One controller.

Which controller someone prefers is not just based on directional buttons and analog stick but also the size and weight of the controller itself.

Personally I think what you have now is fine as most games released nowadays are 3D but I do think there should be an option for a left analog stick or directional buttons.

I think this is a cool proposal, but I don’t know. It’s pretty far fetched. With Atari making a “comeback” and how it’ll most likely backfire. I’m just wondering what would interest SEGA to consider the possibility of getting back into the console market? Especially since SEGA’s and Atlus’s titles have been multiplatformed for so long. A perfect purposal would to keep Sonic and possibily a few other SEGA titles multiplatformed while deeping the consoles line up with SEGA IP’s that are ripe for new titles. Titles along the lines like Skies of Arcadia 2 (A beautiful fantasy titled RPG in 4K) maybe a Remster/Remake of Panzer Dragoon (An Epic classic Arcade like shooter fully realized on powerful hardware) or in the replacement of the lack of an exclusive Sonic game Ristar can be given new life, a character who has garner a cult classic status as the Genesis’s swan song to make a comeback for SEGA’s comeback.
Another thing is backwards compatibility. Now the smartest thing to do is physical emulation so people can play them. Kinda like the Retron. It also reduces getting licensing agreements for curtain games that wasn’t developed by SEGA and put on some sort of Online store (Gotta call it the “SEGA Channel” the brand’s important).
UI needs to be smooth yet it also distinct. Dreamcast did a pretty cool job with the atmosphere, sound and the animated Icons (Take the idea from PS2 game save icons for actual game icons instead of stilted pictures) you’re not making Dreamcast 2, but It’s always good to take inspiration from something so fantastically calming, welcoming, clean and unique.
An enforcement for more public Demos, yes I’m serious. Demos have been a lost art for publishers and developers and have been more reliant on images and videos alone to generate hype instead of the gameplay. A platform (especially a new one) must strive to continuely put out quality software and engage the gamers trust. After all the hardware is as good as its games (Also would work as a good procedure for an Open platform aswell).
Online survices should be free. I know, I know its all about the monthly/annual subcriptions and the usual crappy artsy fartsy “free” monthly game nobody touches. The average gamer is already paying for the exspensive hardware, the exspensive games and the over priced internet they already have. A subcription survice is pushing limits and end give people a bad taste in their mouths. Also if the survices go down at all for whatever reason on a paid subcription survice, that’s some bad news.
Be as consumer friendly as possible. Be open to new ideas and suggestions. Open cross platfrom play. Support new people and studios. And set a new standard on what running a dedicated video game platform is all about and what it means to be a true Spartan of games. After all “SEGA does what Nintendon’t”.

Feel free to use this post as a possible template if you guys ever do pitch this. Gotta make it impactful.

Great work hopefully sega will back the idea, fingers crossed. My question is would there be wireless technology built-in for the controllers + accessories, and what would be the main selling point of this console, what would attract the younger generation that did not enjoy the experience of Sega growing up, the younger generation tend to want a social media aspect to the gaming experience.

    Thanks ?

4K at least at 60 fps would be necessary; can it do that? If not, please upgrade laptop card or use two cards, etc. Do you think Sega would OK open source? You could say yes if you use Google Android as a money-making example. You have to consider why they got away from hardware consoles in the first place: primarily Sony. Economy of scale and years of R&D. They found it sustainable to focus more exclusively on proprietary software. Gun-shy. What about when Sony and Microsoft inevitably release future product generations and the Spartan is still struggling to acquire market share? Sega realized how much money they were losing due to hardware, and software is comparatively cheap. Good luck, I want to see you succeed. 🙂

Hey Jesse, the hardware specs aren’t final but our current prototype does have the specs mentioned on our site. It may be upgraded in the future. As for the OS, it’s not completely open source, only our software is closed source and the software cannot be run on other hardware except for the Spartan.

I want a new sega console sooooo bad. I would suggest, if possible, sticking to cartridges as the primary storage media and make the games actually be on the cartridge. I mostly bring tgis up for the sake of longevity, I mean seriously, there are so many old sega games that are still in perfect working order two decades later. And if the games are entirely on the cartridge, then no one needs to be afraid of something happening, like it being deleted from a server or the internet and then never being able to play it again. It’s not like hard storage mediums, like flash drives are super expensive anymore.

So stoked to see more of this project! Is there any place where I can sign the petition for this?

An open OS is a terrible idea and one that I imagine SEGA would say no to. In order to get this as an official SEGA console (which I would love!) you need a closed OS and have an official SEGA store. Steam can not be any part of this. I love Sega and would love another SEGA console but if this features an open OS with Steam I’ll pass. Also I’d like to see the controller be a merge design of the old Megadrive 6 button controller and the Dreamcast controller.

Hey Craig, we’ve actually rephrased what was previously mentioned about our OS. There will be no Steam on this device. The current software is proprietary to the hardware.

And we’re looking into revamping the controller to have 6 face buttons.

Wonderful Idea for you to make the dream of sega’s return to glory come true!
What should be done is to let Sega release a sonic mania sequel at the releaseing of the console to the market and public as well as a good 3D game whether it be a combat game, remasterd arcade game or all new game of some sort; Or it could be a new 3D sonic game {of which I hope} that shows off the performance of the console to a great extent [ but just like Nintendo it should be a ground breaking game ] I’m not exactly a mario fan, but I think Sega should create a game a bit inspired to that of sonic Utopia and super mario Odyssey – An exploration game where one can explore many places or race past them at high speeds. Remember, you need to be wise in order to get this gaming console to actually be sucessful but from what I’ve seen your going great so far!; Love it, I really do. Don’t forget to take advice from the public, see what ideas you can muster them and take them to sega. It’s been a dream for Sega-Sonic to make a big Return and topple over the other the other consoles and games and so far you’re on that road. You’ve got heart. Don’t listen to aompletely negative comments but take the criticizm int mind to see if maybe they’re right. You can do this. God Bless.

I think that would actually set things apart from the crowd and i miss the old days where consoles were just consoles. If anything have two separate boot options, one for gaming and the other for multimedia so the hardware can be dedicated to one or the other.

Well first off I absolutely love the design for both the controller and the console. Having a dedicated gaming machine out there takes some serious guts. I do have my concerns on what SEGA’s reaction will be to the whole thing. Does it support HDR too? It’s the more significant image quality shift rather than just 4K. Even if SEGA doesn’t take the bait this should still launch somewhere in the future, just because it looks cool and has the potential to do some great stuff.

Hello, I would like Sega to have its own store. It is a great idea that you can insert the cartridges of the old sega genesis. Also, it would be a great idea to remaster the old titles. Another great idea would be to win trophies but not only you have the achievement but also that you earn points or something similar to buy games in the sega store, it would be worth it since it would motivate me more to play and old school people would show their talent in his world of old games like sonic, comix zone, eswat, street of rage, shinobi and others.
I am from Argentina and search all over the internet to find information about something new from sega and I am very happy to know that finally it will see a new console and hopefully it will be official.

Currently in Brazil the predominant consoles are the competitors, but I believe that with Spartan is better.
I really liked the idea of running Linux, I believe that with the development of Vulkan the performance is better than those that are out of competition.
