Where have we been?

The development of the Spartan console project has taken an unfortunate turn, don’t worry it hasn’t stopped. Development has temporarily slowed down.

Our office is based in Cape Town, South Africa. Currently, South Africa is in a peril state. Mass civil unrest, the uncertainty security and possibly the threat of civil war has lead us to make the decision to relocate our base of operations from South Africa.

On top of this Cape Town is going through a severe drought and is the first city in the modern would that may run out of water.

Our focus has always been to keep our team under one roof. We’ve had a key member of our team has left already. With this in mind, not all of our team can move from South Africa.

Where will we be moving?

Now that’s an interesting question. We have 2 feasible locations in mind but an announcement won’t be made until we have made a final decision.

We’ll be prepping smaller updates from now on to show some sort of progress. Sorry everyone.

I’m going to be honest with you guys — I don’t buy this for a second.

First of all, there are WAY too many typos in your post to even take this seriously. Hell, it isn’t even a finished post.

Secondly, the whole situation is just ludicrous. You guys make empty promise after empty promise, saying that you bought a new camera, and then another tweet saying that you “just got the finalized design for the 6-button controller”. How about *proving* it to everyone? Even a SMALL update would be nice rather than posting a lame excuse for why you can’t provide us with ANY kind of update.

For the record, I went ahead and decided to build my own “Sega console” out of various modern PC parts inside a nice little Sentry case, with the Sega logo traced on the front of it. I also plan on buying the Retro-Bit controllers Sega is putting out to make it as official and authentic as possible.

I’m not saying all this to be a troll or a Debbie-downer, but I think if you guys were really serious about making us believe you, you would’ve been more transparent about your operations, and posted a lot of smaller, more frequent updates instead of trying to make every update a big announcement of sorts. The reality is, it’s pretty much impossible to believe a word you’re saying to us here anymore. Sorry guys…

Well, I accept you’re apology. If you guys are really based in South Africa and are having a hard time with you, then I *do* hope you recover from that. But without any physical proof to show where you guys are located (like pictures or something), it’s really just some stranger telling us a story and expecting us to believe it..

          they were based in california….

I do believe they were working with someone in south africa, a coder/programmer. Who was probably making their front endsystem/software… realised this projct simply has no backing, no invetment and no direction. In other words a more of a failure then the new atari vcs.

Their software guy has bailed … just like all the people who initially thought “when they lied about sega being interested” that this was genuine.

sad thing is someones parents have been paying for this webspace for awhile now…

Why don’t you snowflakes understand that you are going nowhere with the sega Brand. If you had half a brain cell you would have talked with tectoy who have far more money then you to find out why sega wont even make a new console with them for the brazilian market.

I can tell you but i think a single cell organism would jave more chance of understanding.

          Creative excuse though… very creative

          1. Chris L - April 29, 2018

You’re completely incorrect, we’re all based in South Africa and will be moving the project over to the UK.

Our main developer and product designer bailed which left us stranded.

Where did you get this false information?

BTW if your looking for a place to move to, might I suggest here in Canada and namely Ottawa. Lots of the needed infrastructure here is in place for a project like this, huge employee base of experienced and skilled technical, marketing and production people are here on the west end in Kanata. Lots of office space and whatnot. Even some competition and other players in the game market place (Phil Giroux from the Tom Green Show has his company Lixar here or players like Shopify for example). If your going to go anywhere, come to Ottawa.

I get it, South Africa is a hectic place, but come on, where are the updates? It’s been so long since I’ve gotten this one that I had started to wonder if I had fallen off the email list somehow. Considering how little info there is on this thing right now, I think the Ataribox has a much better chance of coming to fruition, because 1. It is being fully developed by Atari, not some guys in South Africa, 2. They have appeared with working prototypes at E3 and give consistent updates, and 3. Have released significantly more information to the public, even though Spartan and the Ataribox came into the spotlight pretty much simultaneously. As my name suggests, I own a Switch. I also own a Dreamcast. I am also a PC gamer. I have spent an entirely unhealthy amount of time playing Sonic Mania and Adventure, as well as Shenmue. A new Sega console would be amazing. So why not get your act together, go straight to Sega’s world HQ in Japan, and propose the damn thing? I am praying for this thing to be released, please don’t muck it up and go the way of Project Dream. Also, on a more optimistic note, have you thought of trying to incorporate a VMU into the controller like the one on the Dreamcast? That would make it somewhat of a hybrid system, like the Switch, which could be another selling point.

      Chris L - April 29, 2018

With any small team, when you lose key members it impacts a project significantly. Fortunately, we’ll be able to provide a better flow of updates from now on because we’ve sorted out administration issues and gotten people on board which can push this forward. To answer your points:

      1. Sure, Atari is a corporation and we’re just a little team in South Africa. Atari is asking for money from the public, we’re funding this privately. We’re moving to the UK within the next 3 months. Which brings point 2.
      2. Being in the UK will allow us to easily attend international conventions, overall it allows us ease of travel.
      3. Atari started development prior to us and they have a much larger team.

As we get closer to a finished product we’ll put forward a concise proposal for Sega.
